Cameron Bethany is one of Memphis’ best soul singers, and the Hard Hitters, led by drummer Mike Mosby, is one of Memphis’ best soul bands, so they were a natural choice to kick off the weekly Unplugged Fridays at K-2 Ultra Lounge on Union Avenue in downtown Memphis. Each Friday, beginning at 9 PM, the band plays two sets of excellent contemporary jazz and neo-soul.
The 15th annual On Location Memphis Film and Music Festival got underway in earnest on Friday April 25 with the awards luncheon at Lost Pizza Company on Poplar Avenue. Folk acoustic duo Sunburnt Moon providing the really cool music for the occasion. Registration then opened at Studio on the Square in Overton Square around 1 PM, with films occurring all afternoon. At 7 PM, music showcases got underway at Le Chardonnay, The Blue Monkey, Otherlands, Java Cabana and Newbys, and these ran until midnight. Highlights of the evening included performances by Mike Mosby and the Hard Hitters Band featuring vocalist Cameron Bethany at Le Chardonnay, Cowboy Bob Sawyer and Low Society at Otherlands, and an all-star hip-hop line-up at Newby’s that included Marco Pave, 5th Child, Truth Universal, Marcel P. Memphis traditionally has had a nightlife drought on early weeknights, especially Mondays, so the weekly industry night with Cameron Bethany and his band on the patio at Bar Louie is welcome. Cameron Bethany is an amazingly-talented Memphis soul singer, and he was backed by two of Memphis’ best young musicians, Claude Hinds on keyboards, and Shawn “ILuvDrums” Payne on the drumset. The weather was perfect out on the patio, and the music was first-rate, funky and soulful. I might add that Bar Louie has some of the best hamburgers in Memphis.
Memphis drummer Michael Mosby returned to Memphis after a stint in Atlanta, and has since put together one of the city’s best bands, the Hard Hitters. Last night, at the Zodiac Restaurant and Lounge in Hickory Hill, the Hard Hitters and their vocalists, Brittany Shelby and Cameron Bethany provided the entertainment for a birthday party/event called the Princeton Experience, ably abetted by other rappers and singers, including a great singer named Angela Holmes that I had not heard before. By the end of the evening, the venue was standing room only.

Despite the nasty, wet weather, Thursday night I headed down to the Onix Restaurant in the South Main Arts District to check out my man Mike Mosby’s band the Hard Hitters. The band features two vocalists, Cameron Bethany (@ShoobyDoowah) and Brittany Shelby, and was playing to a packed house, which is no small accomplishment during a rainstorm.
